May reduce menopausal symptoms, but caution should be used for long term use as may have estrogenic effects, caution especially for those with estrogen related malignancy; Scientific studies (multiple meta-analyses) show Black cohosh and foods that contain phytoestrogens show promise for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. Dong quai might slow blood clotting and increase the chance of bruising and bleeding in people with bleeding disorders, so stop taking two weeks before having surgery. Black cohosh can cause some mild side effects, such as stomach upset, cramping, headache, rash, a feeling of heaviness, vaginal spotting or bleeding, and weight gain. There have been some rare cases reported of severe liver damage from Black Cohash, and with liver disorders should consult a health care provider before taking black cohosh products, and anyone who develops symptoms of liver trouble, such as abdominal swelling, dark urine, or jaundice, while taking black cohosh should stop using it and consult a health care provider. It is unclear whether black cohash is safe for women who have had breast cancer. Risks for Isoflavones are being established, and they may lower the immune response and impact growth of cancer.
